He was born in 1948 in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He made his first class debut at the age of 15. He represented Delhi, Gujarat and Punjab at the domestic level. He had an impressive record in first class cricket scoring 8175 runs with a batting average of 40.47. He was a classy left-hander of his time who scored a century on his Test debut against New Zealand. His father Lala Amarnath and brother Mohinder Amaranth are well known Indian cricketers who also played for India.
