Amar Singh was an early Indian cricketer who played in seven Tests for India in the pre-independence period. He was a right-arm fast-medium bowler and a useful lower-order batsman who along with Mohammad Nissar formed the great Indian pace duo at that time. In India’s first Test at Lord’s against England in 1932, he took four wickets and scored an attacking 51 batting at No. 9.  He picked up 111 wickets at an average of 20.78 and scored 641 runs at an average of 22.89 in the first class matches on the tour. In the second Test at Calcutta against England in 1933-34, he finished with best bowling figures taking 4 for 106 off 54.5 overs. In the last Test at Madras, he rose to the occasion in the absence of Nissar taking 7 for 86 off 44.4 overs in the first innings. He hit a hard hitting 48 coming at No. 4. In the 1936 tour, he took 6 for 35 in the first innings at Lord’s. In the second Test, he displayed his batting skill by scoring an unbeaten 48 to help India secure a draw. He once again displayed his batting prowess by scoring a useful 44 in the final Test at the Oval. He was at his best in the five unofficial Tests against Lord Tennyson’s team at home in 1937-38 picking up 36 wickets at an average of 16.66. He had an excellent career in Ranji trophy for Nawanagar and Western India claiming 105 wickets. His elder brother Radha Ramji also played Test cricket for India. He died of typhoid in 1940 at the age of 29.
