Vijay Ananda Gajapathi Raju , better known as the Maharajkumar of Vizianagram was an Indian cricketer and cricket administrator who played three Tests for India. His career as a cricketer was marred by controversy especially when he rose to become the captain of India. He was a great patron of the game and used his personal wealth to sponsor great names to play in India. Riding on his wealth and love for the game, he rose to be an influential figure in Indian cricket in 1930s. When the national competition was about to begin in 1934, he tried to donate a Willingdon Trophy when his bitter rival Maharaja of Patiala fell out with Lord Willingdon, the Viceroy, but was beaten by Maharaja of Patiala with his Ranji Trophy. He captained the Indian side that toured England in 1936 amidst great controversy. After maintaining a low profile for nearly two decades, he returned as a cricket administrator. He became the vice-president of BCCI in 1952 and became the president of BCCI from 1954 to 1957. During his tenure as the vice-president of BCCI, he undertook measures for the upliftment of the game in the country. He was a recipient of Padma Bhushan.
